Liljegren is 21 years old and d-man. It takes time. He made significant strides on the Marlies and should continue to marinate in the AHL on the top pairing for another season or so.

I find it hysterical that some (not saying you) are willing to give Dermott an incredible amount of leash and opportunity despite his perpetual, mind-numbing mediocreness and yet with Tim they're willing to throw him in the trash can after only a handful of games.

I'll agree that I would give Dermott more rope. I think it's because I see, in him, a guy who has potential. He's a decent skater. He plays like he's fairly solid (listed at 6'0 / 205) in terms of stepping up on guys. He doesn't play overly physical, but he can work on the boards effectively, and has done so on a number of occasions. Often times I think, with Dermott, that he's lacking the awareness that comes with age.

In Liljegren, I think part of it is that there's a misguided promise. I speak for me, but I think it's were a lot of people are: I was under the impression that he was a fast, smooth skating defenseman with good offensive instincts. I don't see ANY of that. He's not overly fast, he's not overly shifty, he's not in any way physical, and his decisions with and without the puck are lacking. While the last part can certainly be taught and learned, he doesn't seem like someone who has the raw tools to maximize into anything more than not an NHL'er. As I said, that's my take on him, and it's why I forgive more from Dermott than Liljegren.

That said, your point is not unfair - we didn't even SEE Dermott until he was 21, which is where Lilly is now - so if he gets in a few games this year, he has the chance to start impressing at the same young age.

One more thing that was in Dermott's favour from my perspective, was that we went to watch a number of McDavid's games in Erie, so we saw Dermott in the O, and he was very good on Erie, which led to a positive feeling about him.

Like most D men he needs time to develop. In recent memory the Leafs have either rushed their d prospects (Schenn) or lost patience with them (Stralman) and either the team or player has suffered because of it.

Dermott is so far disappointing. Liljegren will be an NHL d-man. A bit of Leaf history. Leafs in the 70's and 80's were generally very bad. Many first rounders gifted away for little return, especially no patience on developing d-men. In 1976 the Leafs did not have a first rounder, they picked up a player named Randy Carlyle at #30 in the second round. He struggled in the first two years and was traded to the Pens (at age 22) for next to nothing where he won a Norris in 1980. D-men in many cases take longer. RHD that skates well, has a decent shot and is 21 years old.

Incorrect. Teams passed on him because of attitude problems. Well publicized.

Comparing Liljegren to a former Norris trophy winner is a stretch.

I'm not saying we dump him, but I am saying that I don't see anything in his game that demonstrates NHL worthy play. Not just now, since he's only 21 - I don't see it in his tool kit. Maybe you've seen it where I haven't - but I don't even see the skating, which his supposed to be his best asset.
